The Season of Cherry Blossoms is Early This Year

The most popular reason for visiting Japan in April would be definitely viewing cherry blossoms. But the flowering season this year is a little early and cherry trees are already in full blossom now in the central Tokyo.

Are you visiting Tokyo in mid-April? Why don’t you come to SATOYAM@TOKYO? In this rural area of Tokyo, beautiful pink flowers will be in full bloom around the second or third week of April. Now most flowers are still in bud.

And you will enjoy different types of cherry blossoms such as long row of cherry blossom trees along a river, weeping cherry blossom trees and huge, old cherry blossom trees at old temples. Please check out photos of when cherry blossoms are in full bloom around this area.

Please contact us for more details.

Washi paper making Experience

“Washi” is Japanese traditional paper which is designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Washi paper is tough, long-lasting and it feels really nice.

In this workshop surrounded by nature, we can learn how to make washi papers from scratch and make handmade craftwork.

There is a field where “kouzo”, a material of washi papers, grown wild and a water well which they pump water from to make washi papers.

We can also enjoy walking around and having lunch and moreover listening to “Gagaku”, an ancient ceremonial music, performance.

"Ume", Japanese Plum, Viewing Festival

This area is famous for Japanese plum trees. But about 10 years ago, those trees were infected with a virus and more than 35,000 trees had to be cut down.
And now, planting new trees
have just started after the
influence of the virus settled.
So this festival means praying for the restoration and celebrating the beginning of that.

A variety of events were held in this festival.

"Shishimai", Shishi(*1) Dance Performance
(*1) legendary creature lools like lion

Taiko Performance

Samurai Warrior Parade

 "Awa" Dance Performance

“Hina-matsuri”, Doll’s Festival, Exhibition

“Hina-matsuri” is called Doll’s Festival or Girl’s Festival in English. We pray for the healthy growth and happiness of young girls on March 3 every year.
Of course there is a Boy’s Festival too on May 5.

Families with girls display dolls called “Hina-ningyo” in their houses. It is said that Hina-ningyo dolls drive away the bad luck of girls. The dolls are dressed in the imperial court costumes of the Heian period (8th ~12th centuries).

In this season, many Hina-ningyo dolls exhibition festivals are held around the country.

Some of them are vintage dolls and made about 150 years ago.

The dolls should be put away just after Hina-matsuri is over. Because it is believed that the girls won’t get married early if they keep the dolls displayed out.
